The development team has decided to remove the user permissions feature as of .8. This is mainly for performance reasons - by removing user based permissions, the core can avoid another permissions check and SQL query on each page load, the result of which should is a substantial performance increase. Additionally, the function of user permissions can be easily emulated with permissions groups, therefore there is no reduced functionality as a result of the change.

In preparation for .8, we enourage all site administrators to begin the move away from user permissions now. This will make future upgrades to .8 easier, and as it will be difficult to make this an automated process, we recommend the work is undertaken now before it becomes an issue with the .8 release.
